We have run into the same problem. Brand new bike…no place to ride it. I roamed my neighbourhood, built forts and had China berry fights as a kid. I was always dirty at the end of my day. Now when we walk the neighbourhood I have to tell my very nature oriented son to not take the rocks….some one bought those at Home Depot.
One day we hope to live on some land where he can dig holes, build forts and make a huge boy mess safely!

It really is a sad commentary on our lives and how they have changed in just one generation. No neighborhood pickup baseball or football games. No exploring. Everything is so programmed. And worse, I don’t know of any way out of the morass.

I met Ms. Waldman on a plane several years ago, just after Chabon’s Wonder Boys had been made into a movie. She made the trip across the country fly by. Really interesting person.
