Are they serious? What happened to good old book vouchers? Or plain good sense not to skip school? Or beg mom and dad to homeschool for that matter (sly smile)?

Here in Texas 20-odd years ago, I won a television for showing up at my high school every day during the month when overall attendance determined the amount of state funding. My mom was a teacher there, so I would have shown up every day anyway. I have no idea whether the lure of a free TV actually inspired anybody to show up somewhere they weren’t interested in being.

Other side of the coin, and I’m sure the issues are not all the same with high school. When my son was in public school (in “a very good district”) everyone was so obsessed with attendance that kids were coming to school sick and passing their germs around just so they could win the yearly attendance prize. Another “added benefit” was the yearly head-lice epidemic. Guess I’m not a great fan of perfect attendance prizes!
